Help on downloading applications
Downloading and installing an application can be broken in to
five stages:
- Ensuring you have a decompression tool installed
- Download the progname.zip or progname.sit.hqx archive from EuroCool
- Extracting the files from the zip archive
- Using the PalmPilot Install Tool
- HotSyncing the application to your PalmPilot
- Ensuring you have a decompression tool installed (WinZip)
The files on our archive are store in a compressed format. This
means there is only one file to download (usually progname.zip
or progname.sit.hqx), but that one file contains several files
within it, in compressed format. To extract or "unzip" these
files you will need a decompression tool such as WinZip or
Stuffit Expander. If you do not have one of these installed,
download one now.
- Download the progname.zip or progname.sit.hqx archive from EuroCool
Depending on which compression tool you have installed, click
on the link "Download zip" or "Download sit" for the program you
want. A pop-up window will prompt you. Choose the
"Save file to disk..." option.
It is best to create a folder for
each program you wish to download, named after the program. So
create a folder named "progname" and save the file "progname.zip"
there. If your browser has problems downloading the file, try
right-clicking on the download link, as selecting "Save file as...".
- Extracting the files from the zip archive
If you have installed WinZip, simply launch explorer and double-click
on the file "progname.zip" you have just downloaded. Otherwise launch
you decompression tool and open the download file from within the
decompression application. The progname.zip file will contain several
program files within it. Extract these to the progname directory using
the decompression tool.
You should now have several files, including
a progname.prc and readme.txt file. Read the readme.txt file!
- Using the PalmPilot Install Tool
Start the PalmPilot Install Tool from PalmPilot Desktop programs
found under the desktop's Start menu. Located the progname.prc file
and choose "Install..." to schedule the application for installation.
- HotSyncing the application to your PalmPilot
With the PalmPilot in its cradle, press the HotSync button to transfer
the program to your PalmPilot ready for you to run!
If you cannot find the application on the launcher, check it is there
using the built-in "memory app", and make sure you have any additional
programs required to view or run the application, such as TealDoc,
AportisDoc or J-File.
Help on downloading documents
Installing documents is similar to installing applications except:
You will need the appropriate "reader" installed first - such
as AportisDoc, TealDoc or J-File. The document file to be installed
will typically be named progname.pdb not progname.prc as is the case
with applications.
How safe is it to try applications
Ultimately, you try the applications on our site at your own risk.
We do not attempt to test or validate applications. However
trying Palm applications from the internet is one of the
great benefits of owning a PalmPilot and is generally considered
safe as your PalmPilot is backed-up regularly via HotSync (or should be!)
How to use the search
Our search engine is designed to be fast and easy to use.
It performs a "full text search" searching not just for
the application name, but for words contained in the description
as well. Its possible to search for a title, several titles, and/or
by category. You do not need to enter quotes or + signs.
For example you might search for a single application using "poker",
or for several applications using "poker freecell solitaire".
If you are more interested in freeware poker games, search for
"freeware poker games".
If you dont know how to spell the application title you are looking
for just enter part of the word, the search engine will return the best
match. You do not need to enter a "*" as a wildcard.
Link to us
If you like our site why not link to us from your web page.
We offer a free banner space on our site to randomly chosen websites
with a link to our archive. We have prepared some graphics and HTML
to place on your page.
How our download stats are compiled
Our download statistics are compiled from the actual click-throughs
of online users. Several times daily, we update the numbers
displayed on every page to reflect the latest downloads by the
online community. This gives you feedback on which applications
are "Hot" and are maybe worth considering.
However, some of the best applications do not feature on our
Top 50, either because they cater for a specialised audience,
or they have been available for a long time and hence their
daily downloads have been diluted by time - you can find these
by looking at the individual software categories.
